Birdlife at VB

During 2006, the year after the property was acquired, two surveys of the birdlife at VB observed  fewer than 15 species. Since that time the environment has become far more bushy and two steps have been taken to protect birds:

    • Posting of signs announcing that birds are protected and forbidding bird-hunting.
    • Hiring of daytime security personnel, most recently female, who patrol the grounds and instruct bird hunters to leave.

In August 2010, the same person who carried out the 2006 surveys, Miss Noni Fransisca T., carried out two surveys (late afternoon and morning) with colleagues from Burung Nusantara (BuNu). Altogether, they found 30 species. In addition, villagers have surveyed the grounds more intensively for longer periods and found another 9 species missed by the BuNu teams. We therefore believe that about 40 species now can be observed at VB.

The birds of VB include a number of interesting carnivores:

  • The Javan hawk-eagle and two other kinds of eagle, which can often be seen soaring over open ground at VB by day seeking prey and sometimes soaring between pine trees in the pine forest opposite VB.
  • The Sunda owl, which hunts by night.
  • A fishing owl, which hunts by night in the fish ponds at VB, using its fecal pelets to lure fish to the service.
  • Various cuckoos (wiwik) of the genus Cacomantis. Thus insectivorous genus isnoted for the habit of laying its own eggs in the nests of other birds – brood parasitism. The young cuckoo, who is raised by a surrogate mother, waits for an opportunity to kill his foster-siblings.  Wikipedia: “The genus name is derived from the Greek kakos meaning evil or ill-boding and mantis for prophet and is derived from their association with "rains" being supposed to be predict ill fortune and bad weather.” Thewiwik has the same reputation in Java.

It is interesting to speculate on the potential total number of bird species that may regularly visit VB when the arboretum is fully grown. VB is on the border of TNGHS, which claims a total of 244 bird species.  The park on Mt Salak, however, accounts for less than a quarter of the entire area of TNGHS, with Mt Halimun accounting for the rest. It is likely that the number of species on Mt Salak is much smaller, therefore, than the total number throughout TNGHS. A week-long wildlife survey on Mt Salak in 2008 found only 53 species in the Kawah Ratu-Cidahu area between 975 and 1220 masl. We suspect therefore that the potential number of visiting bird species at VB is above 40 but well under 100.
