Exploring the Neighborhood

VB can serve as a convenient base-camp for exploring the neighboring slopes of Gn Salak. To get an early start, you can sleep in the Gudang Kopi and awaken at or before dawn.

1. Trekking and climbing

VB, which is located on the northeast slopes of GnSalak, is a great base-camp for trekking and for climbing GnSalak. There are many routes to choose from:

    • You can walk to nearby CurugCimuncang, only about 30 minutes from the Gudang Kopi.
    • From the fall, you can continue up the adjacent ridgline in the pine forest, then cross to the right to descend on PasirKopengin puspa forest and return to VB. Depending on how high you choose to cross over, you will enjoy a circle hike of about 4, 6 or 8km.
    • You may continue up to the Salak summit at nearly 2100masl, a climb of at least 4-5 hours.
    • You could instead choose to begin the circumambulation of GnSalak by crossing to the right (northwest) above VB at an altitude of 800-900masl. You would leave the pines, traverse rasamala and puspa forest, cross the valley of the CipinangGading and reach an extensive pine forest at the public campgrounds of Sukamantri, in Taman Sari kecamatan, not far from Ciapus.
For the adventurous, the route up Gn Salak could be extended to a long-distance trek by descending Gn Salak to the south, crossing to Gn Halimun on footpaths across settled rural areas, climbing Gn Halimun (back in the TNGHS), and descending to the south coast of West Java, near Pelabuhan Ratu,. There are footpaths all the way, some not yet surveyed. The trek from VB to thesouth coast would take 4-6 days.
If instead you head off in the other direction, towards the former Pondok Gede tea plantation, that lies to the south of VB, you may climb to the Cipalasari waterfall at the upper edge of the former plantation. From that area, you could also climb the Bitung Lega hill at the foot of Gn Salak.
The VB management can find an experienced guide to accompany you on these explorations if you wish. The guide fee would only be about Rp 80-100,000 per day.

2.Mountain biking

The VB neighborhood presents a challenge for wheelmen that draws many to VB on weekends. Cyclists reach VB by way of either the asphalt road from Kmp Tajur Halang Pojok or the footpath on the Awas Paninggal ridgeline up from Kmp Cijulang. From VB, they continue climbing to explore the environs – either to the right on footpaths in the pine forest of TNGHS, or to the left on the many stone roads of the former tea plantation.  While cycling, they can enjoy panoramic views of the Salak summit and of Bogor city to the northwest.

3 Outbound

VB can serve as a base camp for outbound activities in the TNGHS, especially those that focus on environmental education or survival in the forest. VB is seeking a partner that would offer outbond activities based at VB, and is open to proposals from organizations that wish to use VB for outbound activities.
